Established in 1998, the Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution ("CJCR"), formerly known
as the Cardozo Online Journal of Conflict Resolution, has become a key component of
the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law's commitment to the area of alternative dispute
resolution ("ADR"). As a burgeoning field of law, ADR plays a crucial role in
nearly all legal practices. CJCR aims to contribute positively to the academic discourse in
this field. As such, CJCR's biannual publication includes a broad range of notes, articles
and commentaries from students, professors and attorneys, embracing provocative
concepts within the field. In addition, CJCR hosts symposia highlighting some of the most
current and provocative issues. This year's symposium, ADR in the Aftermath: Post-Disaster Strategies, will be held on Friday, October 19, 2007. Please e-mail CJCR_Symposium@yahoo.com for more information and to RSVP.
CJCR complements the various activities and offerings of Cardozo's Kukin Program for
Conflict Resolution, Cardozo's nationally recognized program in ADR. These activities
include: Cardozo's pioneering mediation clinic; participation in intra-school and national
counseling, negotiation and mediation advocacy competitions; a Student Chapter of the
ABA Section of Dispute Resolution; as well as various other symposia and events.
CJCR provides the Cardozo community with a unique vehicle to deepen and develop its
understanding of ADR and continues to contribute to Cardozo's nationally recognized
status as a leader in ADR.
In 2000, CJCR, in conjunction with the Cardozo International Law Students Association,
founded the annual International Advocate for Peace (IAP) Award. This award honors
individuals who embody Justice Benjamin N. Cardozo's passion through their work in
international conflict resolution. Previous recipients have included President William Jefferson Clinton,
Ambassador Richard Holbrooke, Senator George Mitchell, John Wallach and Seeds of Peace, Archbishop Desmond Tutu,
Eve Ensler, and Betty Kaari Murungi.
On March 5, 2007, the IAP award was given to Ambassador Dennis Ross. This year's recipient is Professor Jeffrey Sachs, who accepted the award on October 19, 2007.
